Scream VI Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

An intense but wildly uneven sequel.

Barely a year ago Scream fans were hailing the long-awaited return of the franchise after a decade-plus hiatus, and following the fifth movie's success Scream VI was fast-tracked into production and is now impressively already upon us.

Expectations are certainly high for a sequel that's been hyped up as the series' most violently intense entry to date, while shifting the setting to New York City for the first time.

And while Scream VI does offer some fun revisions on the series' formula and nerve-shredding set-pieces, it's in the details where fans might find themselves most disappointed.

No, you probably won't miss Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott as much as you might expect, yet the narrative core of the movie ultimately lacks the fun and intelligence of the better Scream movies.

For the sixth entry into any horror franchise this is still a solid effort, even if it fails to touch the brilliance of the first two Scream movies and settles comfortably as a lower-middle-tier installment.
