10. Red Riding (2009)
Red Riding, a three-part television series based on David Peaces novels, is one of the most critically acclaimed British miniseries of recent years. Featuring three stories that span across nine years in the county of Yorkshire, the series is a rare example of British noir, mixing fact, fiction and conspiracy against a backdrop of criminal activity and police corruption, with a cast incorporating both up-and-coming actors (such as Andrew Garfield, Rebecca Hall and Robert Sheehan) and established ones (such as Mark Addy, Peter Mullan and Sean Bean). Bean plays the role of John Dawson, a shady property developer, in the first part of the series, coming into contact with cocky journalist Eddie Dunford as he investigates the disappearance of a number of young girls, one of whom is found tortured, raped and strangled on Dawsons land. Dunfords investigation goes awry when it becomes apparent that Dawson is connected with corrupt elements of the local council and police force, whose brutal methods fail to discourage the naïve young journalist from continuing his enquiries, which culminate in the confessional Dawson taking a number of bullets at close range from Dunfords gun.
