20 Secret Movie Sub-Plots You Didn't Notice
5. There's Always Someone Watching - The Truman Show (1998)
The world of The Truman Show is a perfectly controlled organism where everything is monitored, everyone is an actor, and Truman (Jim Carrey) is unaware his world and life is a lie.
It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, then, that the film is also packed with secrets, the most subtle of which is also one of the film's most low-key important subplots.
Throughout the film, Truman is seen wearing a distinctively large ring which is, in fact, a hidden camera. Since it's always on him, the ring allows the Director of the show (Ed Harris) keep tabs on him at all time.
Late in the film, though, Truman is reunited with his long-lost father (who's really an actor), who gave him the ring as a "gift" many years ago. Reunited, Truman gives him the ring back, meaning that the Director can't always see him, making his escape at film's end possible. It's never spoken of, despite being such an important plot device.
