Seth MacFarlane at the Oscars - Is He Ready?

4. He€™s Comfortable With Musical Numbers€.But They Can Sometimes Be Self Indulgent

Stewie Aweigh Another trick in the Seth MacFarlane arsenal is "use a musical number from an classic and/or obscure musical show/film to move things along". Shows and films he's used in the past include, but aren't limited to, On The Town, The Music Man, and The Conway Twitty Show. Anyone who's watched the Oscars knows that they LOVE musical numbers and tribute montages, especially if they were present for the year Hugh Jackman hosted. MacFarlane is a natural showman with his singing talents, and one could safely assume that the dancing isn't too far off, which makes him a natural for these sorts of segments. The problem is, much like a Family Guy episode, it's these segments that weigh down the running time and slow the proceedings down. Awards shows, like comedy, need to be "1, 2,3,A,B,C, Good Night!" You can tell some jokes, you can crack wise and monologue, but you need to ultimately move it along. Young Film Geeks need their sleep for school, Older Film Geeks need to get to work, and everyone at the show is waiting to drown their sorrows or live like world royalty at the after parties. Musical numbers aren't a bad thing, but they aren't easy to set off without a hitch.
