Shaun Of The Dead Vs Hot Fuzz - Which Is Better?
2. Cornettoness
Both Cornetto scenes start with a simple question: "Want anything from the shop?"
Hot Fuzz's is used to advance the plot, with it being here that Nicholas starts to put some pieces of the puzzle together, while also paying off with a great brain freeze gag at the end. It's not a major scene, but it definitely works.
Shaun's is a longer sequence, but perhaps even more important to the plot - and even funnier to boot. An unbroken shot of Shaun going to the shop, buying the Cornetto, and then returning home, there's a lot of gags packed in to such a short space of time: the first sighting of a zombie, the bloody handprints, Shaun almost slipping on blood, then walking past the first zombie again and telling him he hasn't got any change. It's a slice of fried gold.
Of course, we could also look at the way they incorporate the themes of the trilogy, such as growing up and perpetual adolescence, which are more prevalent in Shaun thanks to the journey both he and Ed go on (though again, it's perhaps where The World's End succeeds the most), but let's just focus on the ice-cream.
Winner: Shaun Of The Dead
