Shaun Of The Dead Vs Hot Fuzz - Which Is Better?

Shaun of the Dead
Universal

Edgar Wright decided to subvert genre expectations with Shaun of the Dead, somehow managing to brilliantly blend a zombie movie with a romantic comedy. The film nicely balances both of those threads, and Wright and Pegg's screenplay is imbued with plenty of emotional heft to accompany what's a pitch-perfect zombie movie. As the originator of the rom-com-zom genre, this gets points for both its satire and originality, along with its heart and humour.

Hot Fuzz is yet another spot-on spoof, this time of the buddy-cop/action movie genre. It doesn't have quite the same emotion within as Shaun, but what it lacks there it more than makes up for in how clever, layered, and quotable it is. It spins a number of different storylines and characters that all intertwine towards the end, which is just as impressive a balancing act from Wright and Pegg, while the comedy is sharper, the lines more memorable, and it expertly nails small town rural England.

Winner: Hot Fuzz
