More than any other movie genre, horror has historically been a showcase for the bizarre, the sublime, and yes, the deeply, deeply WTF.

With its inherently heightened style and tone, horror allows filmmakers to go places that most other genres simply can't or won't, enough that even if a film doesn't fully work, it might still serve up something crazy you won't ever forget.

And in recent times these are the 20 movies which delivered completely insane and unexpected scenes that surely nobody could've ever had on their bingo card.

The filmmakers were clearly thinking outside the box with these moments, which for better or worse are continuing to live rent-free in all of our heads.

From wild cameos to gore-soaked death scenes, squicky body horror set-pieces, bonkers plot twists, delirious needle drops, and everything else in-between, these are the moments from recent horror history destined to live on for years and years, if not even longer.

We can only hope that 2026 manages to match this level of inspired insanity, though it'll certainly have to go some to top it...

20. J-Lo's Cameo - Anaconda

Though the marketing for the Anaconda meta-reboot freely spoiled that original star Ice Cube had a "surprise" supporting role, this ultimately allowed the filmmakers to keep the bigger shocker firmly under wraps - a cameo from Cube's legacy co-star Jennifer Lopez.

While J-Lo - who played protagonist Terri Flores in the 1997 film - is briefly mentioned when Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd) encounter Cube in the jungle, it seems clear that the production either couldn't afford or simply couldn't persuade J-Lo to take part in earnest.

But in a fun twist, after finally premiering his Anaconda fan film to enthusiastic reviews, Doug gets a knock at the door from none other than J-Lo, playing herself, who tells Doug she enjoyed his film and invites him to direct an actual, Sony-sanctioned Anaconda reboot.

According to director Tom Gormican, the cameo came together against the odds incredibly last minute, being shot just a month before Anaconda hit cinemas at the end of last year.
