3. Caitlyn Killed Polly's Family As A Child - The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
The recent remake of classic '90s thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle wasn't all that great, but at least it tried to do something different with the savage original premise.
In the original film a deranged nanny, Mrs. Mott (Rebecca De Mornay) insinuates herself into a family's home life after the wife publicly accuses her husband of sexual assault, which results in his suicide and Mrs. Mott miscarrying her child.
But in this reimagining, it's eventually revealed that nanny Polly (Maika Monroe) has a wholly different motive.
As a teenager years earlier, her employer Caitlyn (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) set a fire which killed her parents and infant sister, causing Polly to be cycled through abusive foster homes all while Caitlyn was given a new identity and a second chance.
This becomes even more thorny when, at the end of the film, Caitlyn reveals that she set the fire because Polly's father was sexually abusive towards them both - a claim Polly remains in denial about.
Again, this remake didn't really earn its keep on the whole, but at least the filmmakers tried to do something left-field with it.
