Should Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls Be Remade?

Reasons for Leaving Well Alone

1. The Fans€™ Backlash Could Hurt The Box Office

In an age where films get leaked online easily and potentially everyone is a reviewer, it doesn€™t take much to damage a film€™s reputation and thereby hamper its potential box office takings. The example that€™s often cited is that of Batman and Robin; after a strong opening weekend, its second-week takings dropped dramatically as a result of websites like Ain€™t It Cool News publishing copious bad reviews directed at the film€™s target audience. It can often be hard to rationalise cult status, or the behaviour of a film€™s fans, but either force should not be underestimated. Even if the number of people who like Showgirls is relatively small, they are more than capable of mobilising support for their cause, using the remake as a reason (or excuse) for casual cinema fans. Not all publicity is good publicity, as the makers of John Carter found to their cost, and any remake will struggle to keep the fans happy.
