2. There Is Potential In The Story
The real tragedy of
Showgirls was that the story has a certain amount of potential; it can be argued that it was just told in a really poor way. Joe Eszterhas script is one of his lazier efforts, but there is potential for someone to come along and give the character of Nomi some conviction. It would be especially interesting to see how a younger, female writer (say, for instance, Diablo Cody) would approach a character who goes from selling her body as a hooker to selling the prospect or image of her body as a striptease artist. The story could also tie in with debates about the promiscuity of women as a possible feminist statement, i.e. women viewing their participation in said professions as a form of empowerment. And if the story was to be updated from the 1990s to the present day, then a pop culture-literate writer like Cody could do wonders for the dialogue.
