Sicario 2: Soldado Review - 5 Ups & 4 Downs

1. Hildur Guðnadóttir's Moody, Intense Musical Score

And finally, though the late Jóhann Jóhannsson did not return to compose Sicario 2's score - though that's completely unrelated to his sudden death - his replacement, Hildur Guðnadóttir, does a remarkable job living up to Jóhannsson's legacy.

Naturally, much of the movie recalls Jóhannsson's droning leitmotifs from the original film, but Guðnadóttir also expands on it with his own array of anxiety-inducing ticking clocks and pounding drum beats.

In honesty, you might not even know it wasn't composed by Jóhannsson without being aware beforehand, and much like the first film, the music here feels like a character in of itself. It contributes so much of the movie's unease and atmosphere that it just wouldn't be the same without it.
