Sicario 2: Soldado Review - 5 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Catherine Keener Is Completely Wasted
The brilliant Catherine Keener appears in the movie as a high-up CIA official named Cynthia Foards, and though her Oscar-nominated acting chops make her a fine fit for the no-nonsense world of these movies, she's disappointingly wasted in what's basically a nothing role.
She has just two significant scenes in the entire film, though calling them significant is in fact pretty generous. She gasses with Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) for a few scattered moments and that's pretty much her entire underwhelming contribution to the movie.
The same could also be said of Matthew Modine, who appears briefly as the Secretary of State, but Modine's not exactly on Keener's level.
Given the void left by Emily Blunt's absence this time around, it's a shame Keener wasn't given a fleshed-out, steely female role to sink her teeth into.
