Sin City: A Dame To Kill For - Ranking The Returning Characters

5. John Hartigan

Bruce Willis fit the role of Hartigan like a glove in the first film. His suicide at the conclusion of "That Yellow Bastard" was a grim conclusion to a hero who deserved a lot better, but in the world of Basin City, it was the only logical way for him to win against the scheming Senator Roark. Unlike many of the other major characters, Hartigan doesn't pop up throughout the graphic novels again, chiefly due to his extended incarceration as well as the fact that his death and the final events of his story took place long in advance of stories like "A Dame to Kill For" and "The Hard Goodbye". With the original story "The Big Fat Loss," Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller haven given themselves the opportunity to explore what happened to Nancy after the events of "That Yellow Bastard," bringing Hartigan back into the mix as a recurring vision for her in the process. Though fans are waiting to see whether Hartigan's presence leans more towards the chatty Harry Morgan from Dexter side of the spectrum rather than just being a silent apparition, the idea of seeing Hartigan again, though not alive and well, in a wholly original, anything-can-happen yarn is a neat one.
