Sinister Six Spin-Off Film: 10 Actors Who Could Play The Villains

2. Tom Hardy - Sandman

Hardy Sandman Sandman is arguably the weakest member of the Sinister Six - at least in marketing terms: he will go into the spin-off already hamstrung by the portrayal in Raimi's trilogy ender that saw him reduced to a doe-eyed criminal with a heart, and by the fact that way back in his first appearance opposite Spider-Man, he was overcome using a simple vacuum cleaner. Flint Marko requires a very particular set of traits: his original backstory pits him as a wounded animal, bullied as a child and shaped by parental dysfunction and patriarchal abandonment, and it was that vulnerability that Raimi's version of the character took to too great an extreme, blunting him with an emotional side. The key here is balance, and casting an actor who will provide the hulking physique as well as a relatable, but hopefully less-expressed humanity that saw him betray the Sinister Six in the comics. Tom Hardy could offer both sides of the coin, as he did in Lawless (and in the final stages of The Dark Knight Returns, though that character betrayal is better left forgotten,) combining a considerable bulk with a relatable element that could hopefully give Marko some more charisma than Thomas Hayden Church's curiously wet villain did in Spider-Man 3. And finally, a second suggestion for Flint Marko...
