Smile Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

4. The Compelling Ensemble Cast

In addition to Sosie Bacon's stellar turn as the lead, the supporting cast is absolutely packed with strong performers turning in rock solid work.

As a cop investigating the violent incident which kicks the movie off - who also happens to be Rose's ex-boyfriend - Kyle Gallner is a supremely likeable sidekick of-sorts.

Elsewhere Caitlin Stasey makes her scant screen time count in the movie's opening sequence as one the curse's prior victim, while Jessie T. Usher, Kal Penn, and Robin Weigert are on-point as Sosie's doubtful fiancee, boss, and therapist respectively.

Yet perhaps the stand-out supporting parts go to two actors who appear in just a single scene each.

Scrubs' Judy Reyes is excellent in a short sequence as the bereaved wife of one of the curse's earlier victims, and Rob Morgan is terrific as a man who plays a crucial role in helping Sosie understand the precise nature of the curse.

Nobody's phoning it in here and everyone's instead giving genuinely effortful, worthwhile performances, which is a damn rarity for this type of movie.
