Solo: A Star Wars Story - 10 Best Callbacks To The Original Saga Explained
2. Darth Maul
Here's a moment that's sure to confuse a lot of casual Star Wars fans out there.
In the final moments of Solo, we learn that the ruthless leader of Crimson Dawn, Dryden Vos, is actually something of a figurehead. The man behind the curtain, as it were, is revealed to be none other than the former Darth Maul (who now simply goes by Maul).
Those who keep up to date on the canon Star Wars animated series (as well as the books and comics) are likely very familiar with the fact that Maul was still alive and kicking (with metal legs) well after a The Phantom Menace wrapped up.
He returned as a part of the Clone Wars to exact revenge on Obi-Wan and even took control over the planet Mandalore at one point. He popped up again in Rebels, attempted to turn Ezra Bridger to the Dark Side, then was finally killed by Obi-Wan on Tatooine a mere two years before A New Hope takes place.
All of that said, Solo marks the former Sith lord's very first cinematic appearance since Episode I, meaning that those who only watch the Star Wars films are seeing him for the first time since 1999.
In turn, casual fans of the movies have a shocking moment that marks the big-screen return of one of Episode I's genuinely beloved characters, while those who watch the televisions shows get a great moment that further connects them to the main films.
