Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. The Plot Is A Total Bore
Look, nobody's expecting miracles from the plot of a Sonic movie - based on a video game with a scarcely memorable story itself - but this is shockingly low-effort stuff regardless.
If the first film more-or-less survived on the strength of its road movie dynamic and Robotnik's (Jim Carrey) repeated attempts to wreck Sonic, the sequel ups the scale of the story but not the nuance.
This is basically a garden variety fetch quest as Sonic and Tails attempt to track down the all-powerful Master Emerald before Robotnik does, hopping from one location to the next in pursuit of it, as provides an excuse for various set-pieces.
It's threadbare stuff, and sadly the earnest attempt the movie makes to invest viewers in its lore - namely an ancient feud between the Owls and the Echidnas - isn't much more interesting.
While the first film was smart to barely linger on its narrative at all, there's way more dwelling on it here and not for the better.
