Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

Ups...

6. It's Surprisingly Faithful To The Source Material

Despite all the pre-release kerfuffle about Sonic's original design suggesting that this movie wasn't really interested in representing the character or his games in a faithful fashion, it's a pleasant surprise to report that the film is an unexpectedly reverent adaptation of the hit video games.

For starters, Sonic looks fantastic. Sure, the CGI could be better, but from a design perspective, he is totally recognisable as the same character fans know and love from the games, and the brief early glimpse of Green Hill Zone is brilliant enough to make fans wish more of the movie was set there.

Beyond pure aesthetics, though, the film understands the essence of Sonic as a character, while its overall goofball tone perfectly matches that of pre-existing Sonic media.

Then there are the literally dozens of Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the film, from references to other iconic Zones from Sonic games, to an unexpected nod to a certain popular Sonic meme.

But most importantly of all, fans will be relieved to know that Sonic does indeed eat some chilli dogs in the movie.
