Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

5. Jim Carrey Is Terrific As Dr. Robotnik

The casting of Jim Carrey as the iconic franchise antagonist Dr. Robotnik certainly raised some eyebrows, and the trailers made it tough to figure out whether or not Carrey was about to thoroughly embarrass himself.

But as it turns out, Carrey is one of the movie's easy highlights, giving a delightfully over-the-top, rubber-faced performance which is exactly what a live-action Robotnik should be.

It's a performance that very much feels like a throwback to the Carrey of the mid-90s, steeped in physical acting and exaggerated vocalisations, and so it just might endear the actor to a whole new generation of fans.

He's by far the most lively and energetic live-action element in the entire movie, and if Sonic is successful enough to get a sequel, there's evidently plenty of promise for Robotnik's inevitable return.
