Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

4. The Thrilling Action Sequences

Though you could argue that the movie spends slightly too long with Sonic strapped into a car in its second act, the action sequences are for the most part absolutely riveting, and certainly some of the most source-faithful of any video game movie to date.

Especially entertaining are an X-Men: Days of Future Past-style slow-motion fight in a bar, and the final battle between Sonic and Robotnik, which feels like a boss battle ripped straight from the video games and translated note-perfectly to the big screen.

While so many video game movies totally abandon the aesthetic of the source material in favour of more generic blockbuster thrills, Sonic maintains the essence of the game's visuals and mechanics while integrating them into the tentpole movie arena.
