Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Review: 1 Up & 6 Downs
3. The Quicksilver Scene
As the trailer reaches its climax, it attempts to do what all trailer do; deliver a big money shot moment. The kind of thing that sticks with the viewer, something that makes them feel as though they absolutely must see this film in theaters.
Sonic’s big money shot moment is just a much more poorly-executed version of the Quicksilver scenes from the latest batch of X-Men films. The camera inhabits the point of view of a super-fast character, allowing everything around him to slow down so that he can toy with his surroundings. In the games, this ability is referred to as a time-stop.
For starters, this looks awful and features Sonic delivering a snoozer of a line with “look how many steps I took today” and furthermore, it opens up a whole other can of worms the movie is all-but-guaranteed to not address. In the games, this is a special ability Sonic has so how does he activate it in the film? Can he use it anytime? Or is the film just lazy and hasn’t thought any of this through?
