Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Review: 1 Up & 6 Downs

4. ALL Of The Effects

For a debut trailer for what should and could be (in the right hands) a genuine tentpole property, this trailer looks laughably unfinished in just about every regard. Every single effects shot in this trailer looks like it was ripped out of the hands of protesting workers and just slotted into the trailer regardless.

While it certainly isn’t unheard of for unfinished effects shots to find their way into trailers, this reaches an all new low. With shots like Sonic’s mouth opening to reveal his horrifying teeth or any of the shots of James Marsden riding in the car with Sonic, it becomes increasingly hard to believe this is an actual movie trailer for a studio-produced film.

It feels more like a homemade internet parody trailer than it does the actual thing in a ton of ways, but these unbelievably bad effects certainly don’t help matters. From Sonic himself to the exploding car to all of Dr. Robotnik’s machinery, this is a truly hideous trailer to look at.
