Sony's Marvel Film Universe: 8 Things You Need To Know

1. Marvel Won't Step On Sony's Toes

While Marvel still hold the cards when it comes to Peter Parker's involvement in the MCU, Sony are free to do as they please with their own solo features.

Depending on your attitude to the MCU, this could be a negative or a positive. Criticisms directed at Marvel have claimed that the universe is too formulaic, comedic, and even irreverent when it wants to be. While this author isn't inclined to agree with said critiques, they are understandable, and Sony's involvement with the House of Mouse presents a clear option for those frustrated by the 'MCU feel' of most Marvel blockbusters.

Likewise, Sony haven't been all that great with the Spidey license over the years. Despite Raimi's trilogy having found a place in the hearts of many a fan during its five year run, its quality faded in its third instalment. Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man was also divisive, despite scoring a major breakthrough in the chemistry shared between leads Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

The fact is Sony is far more temperamental than Marvel, which lends their upcoming features an unpredictable quality. No one knows what Venom or Silver & Black will be like, and while that might unsettle the Marvel faithful, there are clear positives that can be gleaned from the move, particularly for those disillusioned by the Whedon-esque inflections of most Marvel works.

It could come back to bite them in the end, but considering the links between the two universes remain tenuous, Sony have more to lose here than Disney do. Here's hoping it works for the better.
