Soul Review: 7 Ups And 3 Downs

7. Up: A Very Different Pixar Movie

For the most part, Pixar has delivered a lot of great movies. Unfortunately, many of them have been somewhat underwhelming, with the Cars franchise (and even Toy Story to a lesser extent) making it clear that the studio sometimes plays things a little too safe.

That's not the case with Soul, though.

The premise may sound like a simple one, but dealing with the concepts of life and death in a movie that's supposed to be aimed at kids clearly wasn't easy. However, Pixar delivers a surprisingly deep look at that without ever getting too bogged down in ideas which will lead to some awkward conversations for parents come Christmas Day.

The way the Great Beyond and Great Before is handled proves to be delightfully unique and pure Pixar (in the sense that, like Coco, it feels like something only they could dream up). If this is a sign of things to come from the studio in the future, then that's extremely exciting for animation fans.
