Soul Review: 7 Ups And 3 Downs

6. Up: A Wonderful Exploration Of The Meaning Of Life

"What is the meaning of life?"

That's a question likely to be asked by people forever more, but it's one Soul does a great job of exploring. For Joe, he was put on Earth to play jazz, and he'll do whatever it takes to make his dream come true. Again, that's a relatable character trait, but in Joe's case, it's clearly having a negative effect on his life.

22, meanwhile, doesn't believe there's any point to being alive. It's a deal that comes with too many hardships, and she has no interest in being told what her purpose is. As this story unfolds, however, it starts becoming apparent to them that neither of them needs to be pigeonholed into certain life decisions.

It's a movie that really gets you thinking, particularly when it comes to making the best of life and whether there even is a real "meaning" behind being alive. It does so in an uplifting way, though, and that's what everyone perhaps needs in a year like 2020.
