Spectre: 5 Things The New James Bond Trailer Got Wrong

5. A Direct Sequel

A View To A Kill may have been a terrible camp-fest and Die Another Day jumped the shark with that CGI wave-surfing, but Bond has never felt as unlike Bond as in Quantum Of Solace. Daniel Craig's sophomore outing was so desperately trying to ape to angst and action of Bourne it took a film as amazing as Skyfall to put the actor back at the top of the pile of screen 007s. One of the biggest problems with Quantum was that it was trying to be a proper sequel, something that had never even been attempted before. Sure, the early films had had some overarching stories (most prominently the ongoing Spectre arc of Connery's era and the death of Tracy Bond), but each actual adventure stood by itself. Solace changed that, directly continuing on from the end of Casino Royale and dealing with a plot motivated by an emotionally broken Bond (similar to the book character's reaction to Tracy's murder). It's a nice enough idea, but doesn't really fit the series, leading to a mumbled character piece that never really got going. It was somewhat inevitable with the same creative team returning (and with the blockbuster market dominated by ongoing stories), but it looks like Spectre is repeating that trick; the trailer start with Moneypenny giving Bond a box of "personal effects ... recovered from Skyfall." It's likely nothing more than something to kick the plot off, but with Quantum still in fans' peripheral memories (it was only eight years ago, after all), it's a risky move.
