"Id rather break this glass and slash my wrists." It's the Daniel Craig quote, from a Time Out interview, that people just can't stop talking about; James Bond hates James Bond. Sure, it's a lot more cutting taken out of context (in the interview it's accompanied with "For at least a year or two, I just dont want to think about it."), but still shows an absolute exhaustion following the incredibly tight shoot on Spectre. Everyone's going into Spectre with this knowledge, so it's something of a relief that none of that shows on screen. From the deftly-shot opening, through the slightly aimless uncovering of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. right to the sudden, direction-altering ending, Craig sells the hell out James Bond, as suave as he's ever been. In the hands of one of the lesser Bonds, Spectre could have easily wound up a bit of a mess, its tonal inconsistencies grating rather than intriguing and the spluttering plot a movie-ruining element. With Craig the film, for all his faults, hangs together. No easy task. I wouldn't go as far as calling him the best Bond (that's still Connery), but he's had quite a run and made a version of the role that is very much his own.
