Spectre had a rather nice running joke about 009, Bond's contemporary who it feels like is repeatedly getting undercut by his two-numbers-less counterpart; his Aston Martin DB10 is nicked and crashed into the Tiber and for the twenty-fourth time he's left presumably making the tea while 007 saves the day from a baddie oddly obsessed with him. I was almost expecting for a hilarious cameo of an actor playing 009 - possibly Idris Elba to really play with all the speculators - but instead he remained an unseen joke character. But will he forever? This is the first time another 00-agent has been mentioned in the Craig era, which could certainly be a lead-in to seeing more of MI6 out of the one-letter branch heads. The program was almost destroyed in the film, so there's definitely the set-up there for a dozen or so agents with deadly skills and a rather shaky job prospects to play some part. And, of course, MI6 is going to need a new 007 now - could Bond return just in time to once again ruin 009's promotion? As for what his character could be, that's probably purposely vague - a 009 appeared in Octopussy's opening and briefly in The World Is Not Enough, but his inclusion here is probably just picked a random number with minimal pre-existing weight (6 is far too linked to GoldenEye, for example).
