The big question on everyone's lips (because only people living in craters didn't know Christoph Waltz was playing Blofeld) going into Spectre was whether it would be Daniel Craig's last Bond film. And while the ending certainly feels like a finale, wrapping up key elements of the character that have been hanging since Casino Royale, it's very much open to interpretation (or, more accurately, whether Craig chooses to return). Although he has made a raft of disparaging comments about the character and shown an exhaustion with the films, it'd be getting far too ahead of ourselves to suggest Craig won't return; whether he's contracted for Bond 25 or not isn't clear, but even if it was for the money, there's still scope for a return. This is probably why we got an ending that could be worked as either case. If anything, making such a major change in revealing Blofeld as Bond's brother actually suggests more adventures. However, we have to consider which franchise we're dealing with. What you have to remember is that Bond has never really had that much consistency in bidding farewell to old, or welcoming new, actors. Lazenby both picked up and re-led into Connery, while early on the idea seemed to be that Moore was still the same person as those. It was only when Dalton came along that we were clearly being introduced to a new version of the character, and since then each incumbent Bond has strutted in independent of whatever his predecessor ended on. So while Spectre appears to gear itself for more story, it's not inconceivable that Craig's successor will simply come in new and totally disregard this movie's ending, bringing across Blofeld, S.P.E.C.T.R.E and MI6 (because, c'mon, you can't ditch those), but existing independently. And, with that in mind, the film works quite nicely as an end to Craig's version, finalising the arc a la Bale's Batman and leaving audiences open for a new take to be introduced in a few years. So, basically, it's totally up to Daniel. Have you seen Spectre? What did you think of the ending? What do you expect to see in Bond 25? Share all your thoughts down in the comments.
