Spider-Man: 10 Dumbest Ideas Sony Had For The Franchise Before Teaming With Marvel
5. A Spider-Man 4... Minus Sam Raimi
Sam Raimi was supposed to direct Spider-Man 4, but that never happened, and Sony instead decided to reboot the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man. However, out of what seemed to be sheer desperation, Sony approached the filmmaker with the idea that he could return and reboot the franchise... for the third time.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box office, and Andrew Garfield ran afoul of Sony bosses after not showing up for a dinner in Japan. As a result, it was back to the drawing board... for a new take from the filmmaker responsible for the first three Spider-Man movies?!
The tentative plan was to make another trilogy and, if needs be, they would have had Raimi serve as a producer. Interestingly, Sony also considered having Drew Goddard make the leap from Sinister Six to this Spider-Man reboot as both a writer and director. There was a lengthy wishlist of directors, though, including names like James Gunn, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Edgar Wright, and Colin Trevorrow.
One idea for this reboot was to focus on an adult Peter Parker (now a high school science teacher), and while that would have worked, going back to Raimi is the definition of retreading old ground.
