Spider-Man: 15 Actors Who Almost Played Major Roles
1. John Malkovich (Twice)
Definitely the biggest dropped ball in the entirety of Spider-Man films is missing out on John Malkovich not once...but twice. Before Willem Dafoe's great (but Power Rangers-esque) Green Goblin, the role was first offered to Malkovich. Perhaps not realizing how big 2002's Spider-Man would be, Malkovich politely turned down the role. However, Sam Raimi wasn't done with him yet.
Then came Spider-Man 4. We already know the problems that Raimi had with the idea of bringing Vulture to screens in Spider-Man 3, and it was more of the same for Spider-Man 4. Shedding Vulture's aged backstory, Raimi's proposed script would have Vulture take over The Daily Bugle and team up on a crime spree with his Vultress daughter, but something just wasn't right. A looming deadline date and a still unhappy script, Raimi was dropped by Sony and a reboot was needed. Luckily Marc Webb was on standby with a ready-made script, and so came the Amazing Spider-Man era - let's just call that one "short but sweet."
Sure, Raimi may have messed up Spider-Man 3 with villain overkill, but the idea of Dylan Baker finally getting to be Lizard, coupled with a Malkovich Vulture, you have to wonder what would have happened next - I guess we will never know.
