Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse makes it abundantly clear that Gwen and Miles are kindred spirits. They have a great chemistry, they're both artists, and they're also struggling with a sense of belonging and fulfilment. When you're a teen, it's easy to feel like you're on an island, but both of them come to realise that there's family and community around them that loves and supports them - even if they did find it in the wrong place with Miguel's team temporarily.

Miles catches onto the bad pretty quickly while Gwen is a reluctant traveller, and now they both get to fight for each other. Gwen assembling her classic team of Spider-Guys to save Miles was a real fist (thwip?) pump moment of the film. It wouldn't be a surprise if Jessica Drew turns out to be a key defector once she's confronted by Gwen's mini army, and realises just how absurd Miguel's mission is. (Fingers crossed that Scarlet Spider also defects, because I love him, and it breaks my heart seeing him being used as a tool for evil.)

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse doesn't have a definitive ending, which is understandable given it's the first half a story. It leaves the next film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, with a lot to resolve, including Miles being captured by the Prowler and Gwen confronting Miguel. Moviegoers won't have to wait too long, fortunately, as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse releases March 29, 2024 - nine months from now.
