Spider-Man: Far From Home - 26 Easter Eggs & References Explained

16. Town Called Malice

Even though it's fair to say most die hard Spidey fans saw Mysterio's betrayal coming, that doesn't detract from just how well executed the moment was. The film actually provides several clues beforehand too, on top of the drone projector Peter accidentally fights during his battle with Molten Man.

When they're sharing a drink at the dilapidated bar, The Jam's Town Called Malice can be heard on the jukebox. Apart from being just a great musical choice to include, the song also hints that something isn't quite right, both in respect to Mysterio, and to Peter's fast-tracked adolescence.

In a way, the lyrics almost work as a means of subliminally unsettling Peter. The song itself is literally about unemployment in Thatcher's Britain, but there's an undercurrent to it about responsibility, and wanting to change a cruel locale for the better.

"Better stop dreaming of the quiet life, 'cause it's the one we'll never knowAnd quit running for that runaway bus 'cause those rosy days are fewAnd stop apologizing for the things you've never done'Cause time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to changeThis town called malice."

Later on in the song there's a line about "lost laughter in the breeze", and that combined with Peter's fear that he won't get to live a normal childhood is what compels him to hand EDITH over to Mysterio.
