Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer Review - 7 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Have... Have They Just Stolen Syndrome's Arc From The Incredibles?!
If you have any sort of awareness of Mysterio as a character - and you probably do if you're a Spider-Man fan, let's face it - you know that he's a villain. He might sometimes be presented as a somewhat bumbling figure - which he would have been in Sam Raimi's planned Spider-Man 4 - but he's definitely on the Spidey Rogues' Gallery.
Seeing him here seemingly presented as a hero who helps Spider-Man on whatever the mission he's set by Nick Fury is a little confusing in that respect, but it gives away too much for anyone who has seen The Incredibles. Mysterio using his magic to "defeat" giant monsters is awfully suspicious when you know he's a villain capable of great feats of illusion, who is definitely conjuring those monsters in order to fight them off himself to appear to be an even better hero than Spider-Man. In other words, basically the same plot as The Incredibles.
His backstory presents him as an actor who always wanted fame, so having him discover magic and then stumble upon this means for fame is all very obviously seeded.
That said, it's going to land nicely with younger, less-aware fans seeing a new hero turning up to help Spider-Man, so it's not ALL bad.
