Spider-Man: Homecoming Review - 9 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Peter Parker

It was already said after Captain America: Civil War, but Tom Holland is easily the best Peter Parker to date. He is helped considerably by the fact that he's been cast to play the high-school version of the character who is yet to really blossom into either a man or a fully fledged hero, but his cocky bravado and stifling vulnerability combine to make him feel like the purest screen iteration of the comic book character.

Holland ticks every box, capturing Peter's slight gawkiness in his own skin and Spider-Man's just-charming-enough cockiness (which could be hugely annoying in other hands), balancing the obnoxiousness with an earnest enthusiasm that is delightfully intoxicating.

Like John Hughes' finest heroes, you really care about him, even when he's not making the right decisions (which is a simple thing, but a hugely important one in this type of film), and Holland's ability to encourage that shouldn't be underplayed.
