Spider-Man: Homecoming Reviews - 11 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
11. The John Hughes Vibe
One of the most exciting aspects of this movie, and something that - after so many attempts at putting Spidey on the big screen - would help it feel fresh, was that we were getting a Peter Parker who was a real high school teenager.
While there was a risk that could be lost among all of the superhero action, since a number of big action-sequences have been teased along with a heavy presence for both Vulture and Tony Stark, the reviews suggest the movie has nailed the high school setting:
"The movie is as high school as a John Hughes comedy – think The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller's Day Off – in which teens talk like teens instead of old-school Hollywood cynics aching to sound young... What's onscreen pops with the jumpy, unpolished energy of adolescents on the march through puberty." - Rolling Stone
/Film also go with the comparison, which is the obvious touchstone for high school comedy, saying it's an "authentic portrayal of high school life that would make John Hughes proud."
The Guardian adds: "[Peter] also attends what feels like an actual New York high school: racially diverse and with just the right level of grit."
