Spider-Man: Homecoming - What Does The Ending Really Mean?

6. Michelle IS MJ (And She Likes Peter)

Before he turns down Tony Stark, Peter returns to school, where he speaks to a distraught Liz about her father: she reveals she and her mother are moving to Oregon. That means the Academic Decathlon team needs a new leader - a title that goes to Michelle after her winning contribution at the national competition.

In a moment that almost exactly mimics the spirit of the Robin/Blake reveal at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, Michelle says "my friends call me MJ", confirming what had been speculated for months. She's the new version of Mary Jane Watson, who clearly doesn't exist in this universe as she did in the comics.

And as she cheekily goads Peter about having to leave the celebratory meeting, she gives him a look that very much suggests that we're going to see her become a romantic interest for Peter in the future, just as MJ always is.
