Spider-Man: No Way Home - 10 Darkest Moments

9. MJ's fall

In No Way Home's climactic battle, the Green Goblin tosses a pumpkin bomb, destroying the device containing Doctor Strange's spell and knocking MJ backwards off of the Statue of Liberty. Tom Holland's Peter jumps to save her, but the Goblin knocks him away as she falls. Andrew Garfield's Peter then steps up, catching MJ and saving her life.

Given MJ's survival, this scene does not seem particularly grim. However, it is intentionally evocative of a similar scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, when Andrew Garfield's Peter fails to save his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, from the Green Goblin. Gwen's death in the comics and film is one of the most disturbing moments in Spider-Man history, with some versions of the death even emphasizing that Peter's web fluid catching her fall is what broke her neck.

Andrew even reminds audiences of this moment, crying as he saves MJ from a fate from which he could not save Gwen. A tearful Garfield asks MJ if she's OK, to which a confused MJ says yes, before asking if he is OK.

No, MJ. We are not OK.
