Spring Breakers: Is It Ironic Or Idiotic?

1. The 'Britney Spears' Moment

spring-breakers6 The strongest piece of evidence in the file marked 'Satire' is the scene in which the girls gather round Alien, who is sitting at a poolside baby grand piano, and burst into an impromptu rendition of Britney Spears' ballad 'Everytime'. It's inexplicable, surreal and sure to be one of the year's most memorable movie moments. And, as it plays over a montage of the girls, back in their pink bikinis and balaclavas, punching and pistol-whipping men you assume to be connected to Archie, it becomes yet another Song Forever Ruined By Movie Violence. For pure cinematography, it's the strangest but most entertaining part of the film. However, you can't help but notice how much the scene resembles a 90's r'n'b video, a comparison hinted at when Alien says ''I guess y'all wanna see my sweet, sensitive side, huh?'' before tickling the ivories. But for a film that trashes its way through pop culture, skewering celebrity and reality TV, the glorification of guns and the glamorisation of girls, a 2004 Britney song seems a little, well, outdated. For the best part of ninety minutes, the girls (and the film) have hardly hidden their unyielding obsession with Spring Break when, for at least half of them, it was an anticlimax. Of course, this may well be the point that Korine was building us up to; it's just a shame that the few brief sparks of satire are lost in the sensationalist, self-indulgent, dumb summer party it purports to poke fun at.
