A criticism that is often lobbied at the Kazon is that they are a watered-down, discount version of the Klingons. While the execution of them as a race does support this assessment, their initial origins are far darker and inspired by a far more violent real-world organization.

The main inspiration for the Kazon was the Crips, the collection of Street Gangs that were formed in southern California in 1969. With a membership boasting somewhere between 30,000 and 35,000 in 2008, they are among the largest gangland associations in America.

They were both one unit and a collection of smaller sets. It is this element that inspired the Kazon, who are both part of the Kazon people as a whole but are broken down into their various sects. The Kazon Olga are introduced in Caretaker, and they are just one of many that would then appear throughout the first two seasons of Voyager.

Their modus operandi, namely in stealing supplies, bullying the Ocampa, and attempting to raid Voyager, are all inspired by various tactics employed by street gangs.
