Star Trek: 10 Best 'I'm Dead And I Know It' Moments

9. Captain Rudy Ransom - Equinox, Part 2

Star Trek Voyager
CBS

Equinox is one of the best two-part episodes of Star Trek: Voyager's run, thanks in no small part to John Savage as Captain Rudy Ransom. He is an extremely interesting character, as he is equal in rank to Janeway, so he is the only true Starfleet peer that she has met in five years in the Delta Quadrant.

To say that the meeting is disappointing doesn't do it justice.

The USS Equinox is already battered to bits by the time the USS Voyager catches up with her, so it isn't much of a shock that the Nova-class vessel doesn't survive the climax.

However, while it might have been slightly predictable that Ransom wouldn't survive the encounter, John Savage sells the man's acceptance of his fate.

There is a small device that allows him to project an image directly into his mind. As the Equinox counts down to destruction, he activates the beach scenario and seems to finally be at peace, following years of chipping away at his own soul, all in the name of protecting his crew.

As Janeway says, he was a Starfleet captain in the end, even if he lost his way a little along the journey.
