Star Trek 3: 5 Reasons The Borg Should Be The Villains

5. They May Suit A New Director Perfectly

borg6 It seems unlikely that J.J. Abrams will come back and direct a third film- but that€™s not necessarily a bad thing. The new crew can be taken in new directions and shown in different lights by someone else. We don€™t want the series getting stale. And maybe The Borg would be better served under another Director. Abrams has been beyond brilliant, but maybe he wouldn€™t do a good job with The Borg because they don€™t suit his preferences. There has been much rumourage (if that€™s even a word) that Joe Cornish might just be the man to take over the next Star Trek- thinking about it, he may be perfect. He has experience with blockbusters, a visual flourish of his own and a penchant for wit and humour that is in tune with the current version of Star Trek. And if The Borg are the new enemy, he may be even more perfect than we first thought. If you are one of the few to see Cornish€™s excellent debut film Attack The Block, you know how well he did Horror and €˜Creature Feature€™, providing flair to a tense and claustrophobic movie that happened to feature carnivorous and aggressive aliens that looked very different to the kind of Extra-terrestrials we are used to seeing. To return to my praise of Jonathan €˜Riker€™ Frakes€™ direction of Star Trek: First Contact, though the film was by no means perfect Frakes didn€™t fail when it came to The Borg. They looked and acted horrific like they should, and there are some real flashes of genius and inspired moments involving the Borg that just couldn€™t be done with Klingons or Tribbles or whatever else. We€™ve had action and thriller with Star Trek- let€™s have a horror film! That€™s certainly possible with The Borg. The Borg wouldn€™t just be great under Cornish€™s direction, however. They have a lot of potential with whoever takes charge next- ideally the director would have some experience with Horror. Look at the much-loved blockbusters that have been overseen by horror directors and how great they€™ve been. Joe Dante with Gremlins, Sam Raimi with Spiderman (most apparent with Doctor Octopus€™ massacre of surgeons in Spiderman 2), and Tim Burton with Batman (can you imagine Joel Schumacher coming up with anything like the haunting opening to Batman Returns?). Could we add, say, Joe Cornish and Star Trek XIII to that list in the future? And The Borg could be great not just for a Director, but Composer as well. Michael Giacchino€™s score is one of the best things about the new Star Trek movies, so imagine the fun he could have creating a new theme for The Borg. That in itself is enough reason for me to push for The Borg reappearing!
