Star Trek 4: 8 Villains We Might See

6. The Changeling

Klingon Star Trek
CBS Media Ventures / Paramount Pictures

The Changeling are not necessarily evil, but their pursuit of corporeal form could provide a different type of body horror to the Borg, providing a paranoid, Cronenberg-style fourth film that makes us question what it means to be human.

The Changeling's motivations are not necessarily evil, and by the end of the film the crew's potential defeat of the Changeling could make them look like the villains.

Their physiology has real cinematic potential. They cannot retain one physical form for too long, or they begin to deteriorate, which could mean their personalities or attitudes change at a vital moment when the Enterprise crew have managed to reach a compromise with them. They are unpredictable, because it is in their nature - it is a survival technique. It's almost impossible for Kirk to reach an agreement with them.

They can mimic fire, clouds, electronic devices... they can be anything, anywhere, at any time. The crew would turn on each other and the film would be reminiscent of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Star Trek Beyond was a step in the right direction- a lot more intimate, personal and contained than the previous two films. A fourth film where the crew face the Changeling would really let us get to know Kirk, Spock et al at their worst and really see their flaws when faced with such a challenging force.
