Star Trek Beyond: 10 Best Moments

7. The Krall Twist

Star Trek Beyond
Paramount Pictures

In the third act, the Enterprise crew finds a video which explains Krall's origins: he was originally a human by the name of Balthazar Edison, the Captain of the USS Franklin, which went missing around a century prior.

The videos show Edison suffering what appears to be a mental breakdown after his ship gets stranded, and his use of alien technology to extend his life resulted in him not only mutating physically but also going insane, only exacerbating his hatred of the Federation for "abandoning" him.

While not the most imaginative twist in the world, it adds depth to Krall as a character and makes him more than just a generic alien invader: he has a tragic, relatable backstory, and it also unexpectedly adds Idris Elba's actual face into the mix, as most surely figured he'd be behind makeup for the entire movie.
