Star Trek Beyond: 10 Things It Did Better Than J.J. Abrams
3. Action Scenes Are Well Executted
This should come as no surprise to those familiar with
the work of Justin Lin, but the film does feature some exception action scenes,
and a great deal of variety too. From space battles to smaller skirmishes on
the ground, Beyond is a more than serviceable action blockbuster, proving fully
capable of delivering the goods. Fight scenes are well shot, and the action
itself is paced splendidly, never quite verging on the exhaustive proportions
of Into Darkness.
Best of all: the action itself is shot logically (no pun intended), as clearly a great deal of thought has been put into the framing and execution of each individual scene. The destruction of the Enterprise is a particular highlight, and happens to feature rotating stages, as well as countless practical stunts, some of which look genuinely spectacular. You won’t lose track of the action, and despite the seemingly chaotic nature of the entire sequence, it is masterfully handled and executed without too much of a reliance of special effects.
