Star Trek Beyond: 25 Easter Eggs, References & In-Jokes

This still sort of being a JJ Abrams project, childhood friend and frequent collaborator Greg Grunberg turns up for a brief supporting role as Commander Finnegan, the head of base defences (or the commanding officer of the bridge) at Yorktown.

Grunberg has previously appeared in Lost, Mission Impossible III and Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Snap Wexley. He was also originally planned to appear in Abrams' Star Trek, but was forced to pull out over a scheduling conflict. He did still voice Kirk's stepfather in the opening sequence however.
