Star Trek Beyond: 25 Easter Eggs, References & In-Jokes
18. Sulu's Home Life
As was widely reported ahead of the film's release, this iteration of Sulu is gay and happily married to a man, with a young daughter. This is revealed first by a token photo on his console, and then when the Enterprise crew lands at Yorktown.
According to writer Simon Pegg, it was done very consciously as a tribute to George Takei's tireless work within the LGBT community. Takei wasn't impressed, saying it was a betrayal of Gene Roddenberry's original vision.
Somewhat controversially, a kiss between Sulu and his husband was seemingly cut from the final edit.
The pair also have a daughter, as the original Sulu did in the later Original Series cast movies.
