Star Trek Beyond: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

Controversy be damned, John Cho gives another terrific, restrained performance as Sulu that doesn't merely recall George Takei's riff on the character but very much makes it his own.

The fact that Simon Pegg has written Sulu to be gay in Beyond received much press online, specifically that Takei himself disapproved of it, but honestly, it takes up maybe 20 seconds of the movie and passes without much of a second thought.

As for the core narrative, Sulu has some of the weaker material when paired with Uhura, often as a prisoner or in a passive role, but when he's in his chair, he's totally kick-a**.
