6. 'Lower Decks' Animated Comedy

Definitely going ahead is a new Star Trek animated comedy series called 'Lower Decks.' This will take the form of half-hour episodes focusing on some of the crew members who perform less glamorous tasks on a starship.

Star Trek has, of course, previously had an animated series which continued the adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise after the The Original Series was cancelled back in the 60's. It ran for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 and featured most of the original cast including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

This latest foray into animation will be quite different, however. It will centre on the support crew of a 'less important' Starfleet ship. While there must be plenty of great stories to tell away from the bridge the short episodes and 'comedy' format may give some people pause.

In it's favour is the fact that the idea for the show came from Mike McMahan, who has past experience turning sci-fi into a hilarious and wildly-successful short-form comedy as one of the men behind Rick & Morty. Apparently his pitch to Alex Kurtzman was "I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end."

While this may not be exactly how replicators work, McMahan is a fan at heart and has promised that the show will still be "undeniably Trek."
