Star Trek Into Darkness: 6 Flaws That Almost Ruined It

1. Scotty

Scotty As much as it pains me to say it, Simon Pegg was miscast as Scotty. He is Shaun Of The Enterprise, rather than a reliable chief of engineering with some personality quirks, as the character specifications requires even despite the non-canonical reinvention of the crew (everyone else is a close approximation of their "other selves.") There are some pleasant moments, like a clash with his captain, and some successful jokes ("I'm running!) but you're never far away from the feeling that there is too much of Shrek in his comic outrage, and too much of other Pegg characters in the rest of his nerdy make-up. Unlike the rest of the characters, Scotty never really displays anything that suggests why he would be part of the premier crew in Starfleet in this universe - yes he is hyper-intelligent, but when you couple that with wanton buffoonery and a lack of any kind of physical threat, he is basically a liability. The expectations of a Scottish engineer are somewhat at odds with this mild-mannered odd-ball, to say the least. Plus his accent wanders all over Scotland, as well as England at some points, and it's all very distracting. These may seem like minor gripes, but in the context of what is otherwise a great film, they matter. That does not mean you shouldn't go and see the film immediately on its release. Star Trek Into Darkness is released to UK cinemas next week.
